Juliane Fleck is a pharmacist, qualified in Industrial Pharmacy, and with a PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). She took two post-doctoral internships, the first at the Plant Physiology Laboratory at UFRGS’s Department of Botany and Center for Biotechnology (as a Junior Post-Doctoral/CNPq fellowship holder), and the second at Feevale University’s Molecular Microbiology Laboratory (as a PNPD/CAPES fellowship holder). She is also a full professor of the Academic Masters in Toxicology and Toxicological Analyses, a collaborating professor of the Graduate Program in Environmental Quality and coordinator of the Graduate Program in Virology.
She develops studies in the fields of virology, experimental toxicology, and environmental quality, from the One Health perspective, having received a few awards as recognition for her research: Alfredo Leal Award of Academic Merit (School of Pharmacy/UFRGS); and Title of Female Citizen (Novo Hamburgo City Hall in 2021).
Juliana says that her interest in STEM fields began as a child, because “I was also really curious and passionate about learning. Understanding why and ‘how things work’ encouraged me all the time, especially when it came to the health-illness processes.” She decided to study pharmacy because it incorporated applied knowledge from the fields of biology, chemistry and mathematics.
On the participation of Women in STEM, Juliana understands that “[…] the evolution of knowledge happens from the contradictory, discussions, analyses and critical reanalyses. Diversity in the formation of research groups in STEM, then, allows the teams to be more creative and efficient, broadening possibilities for breakthroughs in new solutions and for the advance of knowlege.”
