Professor Helen has a degree and a Masters in Physics, having completed her PhD in Experimental Explosives Physics in 2006, both from the University of Cambridge. Since then, Helen has served as Visiting Scholar in the University of California’s Institution of Oceanography (USA), took a post-doctoral internship at the University of Rhode Island’s Graduate School of Oceanography (USA), and participated in the Natural Environment Research Council at the University of Southampton’s Institute of Sound and Vibration Research. Since 2013, she has worked at the University College London as research and professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering.

At UCL, she has worked as a tutor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (2017-2021), as coordinator of the “Introduction to Thermodynamics and Fluid Mechanics” module (2015-2021). Currently, she lectures on “mathematical methods for analysis” (2015-present), participates in three committees (Departmental Education Committee; Staff Student Advisory Committee; and Improvement of the Student’s Learning Experience Committee), and acts as Initiator and coordinator of the London Ocean Group (from 2015 on).

Throughout her academic journey, professor Helen collects several awards and acknowledgements, such as the Golden Medal for the Institute of Physics (2018); Honorary Member of Churchill College (2020); Asimov Award (a national award for scientific books from Italy) (2018); the Honorary Fellowship Award, from the British Science Association (2020).

In addition to her academic work at the university, Helen is also passionate about publics’ involvement in scientific topics and has extensive experience with lectures and public demonstrations, as well as scientific media work, working in several TV shows, such as BBC documentaries, and is a regular guest in shows such as The Infinite Monkey Cage, Loose Ends, Saturday Live, Midweek, Womens Hour, the Today programme, Inside Science, Richard Bacon show, Crowd Science, the Forum, Private Passions, Start the Week.
