Angela Wyse began her academic career at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande (FURG). However, she became interested in Biochemistry in the very beginning of her academic life, in college. Because of that, she went on to pursue a Master’s and a PhD in Biochemistry at Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS). Angela is a Full Professor of the Department of Biochemistry of the Institute of Basic Health Sciences of UFRGS. She is also a fellow at the Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico – CNPq – , level 1A, the highest level of excellence.

She is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences (ABC) in the area of Biological Sciences and of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS) in the area of Medical Sciences and Health/Neuroscience. She has been firmly engaged in research teaching, having advised more than 15 post-doctoral fellows, 30 PhDs and 45 Master’s students. Some of these students currently work as researchers at several universities in Brazil, the United States and Europe. Angela Wyse is also a member of the editorial boards of specialized journals and participates in peer review projects at several research funding agencies in Brazil and abroad.

She studies various experimental approaches ranging from neurochemistry to behavior. She also does research on neuroprotective agents, such as antioxidants and physical exercise, on behavioral and/or neurochemical changes in experimental animals for neurometabolic and neurodegenerative diseases. Her research also includes the biochemical and molecular mechanisms of memory.

She has published over 400 scientific articles in international peer-reviewed journals, having received a significant number of citations (Web of Sciences, citation 7806, H index = 41). Angela has won several awards, including the Prêmio CAPES-Elsevier 2014 for her contribution to science in Brazil, and the Prêmio Gaúcho de Pesquisa 2018 by Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Rio Grande do Sul (FAPERGS). She also won the Scientist Year 2020 Award by the International Achievements Research Center, Chicago, USA. Additionally, Angela published a book titled “Neuropoesia”.

“In all areas, men and women have to enjoy the same rights, opportunities and responsibilities. We need dedicated, committed and competent professionals, regardless of gender. That’s why programs like this one, by the British Council, are very important, as they encourage and support women from the Americas, South and Southeast Asia to pursue a Master’s degree in STEM at one of the UK’s leading universities. It will be a great opportunity for women who want to pursue a scientific career in science as it will inspire future generations.”
