King’s College London focuses on world-leading education, research and service and playing an increasingly proactive role in our more interconnected, complex world. Its vision is to make the world a better place through being an international community which serves the world. The institution has a distinguished reputation in health and sciences.
Vision 2029, King’s College London strategy is built on five pillars: Education, Research, Internationalization, London and Service. Internationalization is a core part of our mission: we are an international community which serves the world, based in the global city of London. The institution strives for all its staff and students to have a global problem-solving mindset.
Our established and recognized research center, the Global Institute for Women’s Leadership, conducts high impact research into gender in society. We center equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) in strategic decisions and regular processes (e.g. promotion). We have built foundations of effective governance and senior sponsorship, facilitation of staff networks, and using a data-informed, intersectional approach. King’s has shown commitment, maturing experience and expertise in progressing gender equality, as recognized by Athena Swan accreditation.
King’s has been a long-term signatory of the Athena Swan. Charter, holding a Bronze award since 2008, renewing in 2013 and 2016. In November 2020 we applied for Silver. The challenges experienced on our Athena Swan journey have meant we have significantly developed as an organization, learning from our setbacks and panel feedback.
We have transformed our approach to Athena Swan, gender equality to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI). We commissioned an external Equality, Diversity and Inclusion review, created a new senior Director of EDI role, and revolutionized the EDI operating model at King’s. We changed our approach from discussion to action, and empowered local grassroots activity to inform strategic, coordinated Equality, Diversity and Inclusion work. Through focused gender equality work in the last 5 years, we have improved:
We are active and visible in UK AS networks and engaged in Advance HE’s work. Through peer knowledge exchange we continually learn and share best practices.
