Introduction
Marcus H Jones graduated in medicine in 1984 from Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Porto Alegre, Brazil, and was then a resident in paediatrics at the Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre from 1985 to 1986. From 1987 to 1991, he was a clinical fellow in Adult and Paediatric Pulmonary Services at the Hospital de Clinicas de Porto Alegre. In 1996, Dr Jones moved to Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, as a research fellow, where he worked under the guidance of Dr Robert Tepper until 1999. In the USA, Dr Jones produced important research in the area of lung function in infants and lung development. In 1999, he took over as assistant professor at the Department of Paediatrics of Pontifícia Universidade Católica, Porto Alegre, Brazil.Dr Jones is a member of the American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society. He was the chair of the Working Group on Infant and Young Children Pulmonary Function Testing Committee at the American Thoracic Society from 2006 to 2009. He was also the chair of the Department of Paediatric Pulmonology of the Brazilian Thoracic Association.His main area of interest is respiratory physiology and the effect of prematurity and viral respiratory infections, particularly RSV, on lung development.
