PUCRS-PrInt manager went to USA and Canada

The Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies and School of Health and Life Sciences professor, Dr Carla Bonan, went on a mission on the Institutional Project of Internationalization (PUCRS-PrInt) late in October. The PUCRS-PrInt manager went to Neuroscience 2019, in Chicago, USA, and visited Canadian institutions.
In Chicago, Carla presented the paper Influence of Habituation and NMDA receptor antagonism on novel object recognition and object location tasks in zebrafish. This investigation was embraced by the priority area Health in Human Development. In this study, researchers established two spatial memory tasks were in zebrafish to be replicated in studies of neurological diseases characterized by cognitive deficits.
“In addition, the study contributed to the identification of neurochemical pathways and the impact of stress on memory processing. This investigation is also important in that it brings the areas of Neuroscience and Biochemical and Molecular Pharmacology together. This convergence is one of the characteristics of the Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Biology and the Graduate Program in Medicine and Health Sciences,” she says.

In addition to her trip to the USA, Carla Bonan visited Professor Robert Gerlai’s laboratory, at University of Toronto, in Canada. She held several meetings to analyze and discuss the findings that are being obtained under the cooperative project, which involves the work of student Debora Dreher Nabinger. She has been doing a doctoral research internship at the institution while being enrolled in the Graduate Program in Cellular and Molecular Biology, since Sept 2019.
In Canada, the PUCRS-PrInt manager delivered the seminar Purinergic signaling and its relation with models of neurological disorders in zebrafish to undergraduate and graduate students as well as postdoctoral researchers and members of the Department of Psychology. She also had the chance to introduce the audience to PUCRS-PrInt’s opportunities and possibilities for the development of actions of internationalization involving the two Universities.
The Vice President also paid a visit to Ryerson University, to discuss the opportunities for internalization. Lastly, Carla went to Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, at University Health Network, to learn more about Latner Thoracic Surgery Research Laboratories.
