Earlier in September, School of Humanities professor, Dr Hermílio dos Santos, went on a mission to Newcastle University, in the UK, under the Institutional Project of Internationalization (PUCRS-PrInt). PUCRS and the British university have a consolidated partnership, as several projects in cooperation in different areas have been developed.
During the time he spent in Newcastle, Santos met with Professor Robin Humphrey, with whom he has been cooperating with since 2014. Santos introduced him to PUCRS-PrInt, in an effort to present the opportunities the project can bring forward. In addition, he had the chance to meet with Karine Schuh Reif, a graduate student of PUCRS who is now doing a research internship at Newcastle University. He also met with Clare Vaughan, a British student who is being co-advised by Santos.
Sociology Forum
The mission also served for Santos to meet with the president of the International Sociological Association (ISA), Sari Hanafi, to discuss the ISA’s 5th Sociology Forum, to be held at PUCRS in Jul 2020.

This will be the first time that Brazil will host an ISA event, created in 1940. Professor Hermílio Santos has been a member of it for over 20 years and currently serves as chairman for the Biography and Society committee. In 2016, PUCRS submitted a proposal to host the event. “It will be the biggest Sociology event ever held in Brazil, as more than 5,000 people from all continents are expected to attend the more than 1,000 sessions that have been scheduled,” Santos celebrates.
Biographic narratives under discussion
In his visit to Newcastle, the documentary film produced by Hermílio Santos Mundo da Vida – A Sociologia de Alfred Schütz was exhibited faculty and doctoral students of the School of Geography, Politics and Sociology. The professor also had the opportunity to interview researchers Corinne Squire (University of East London) and Kaja Kazmierska (University of Lodz, Poland) as part of his upcoming documentary that will address biographical narratives in sociological research.
He is working under the cooperation project Macro and microeconomic aspects associated with economic, social, human and environmental development, which is coordinated by Dr Edimara Luciano, under the priority area World in Motion: Individuals and Society.
