Henry Cagnini takes part in project on knowledge extraction from big data

PhD student from the Graduate Program in Computer Science (PPGCC) Henry Cagnini went to the UK for a doctoral research internship as a PUCRS-PrInt grantee (Call 05/2019 – Doctoral Research Internship Abroad). Cagnini will be spending six months at the University of Kent, in the UK. He is working on his investigation in support of the project Knowledge Extraction from Big Data, which is coordinated by Professor Luiz Gustavo Fernandes, under the priority area Technology and Biodiversity: Sustainability, Energy and the Environment.
During his stay in Europe, Cagnini is expected to continue working on experiments with evolutionary algorithms for his dissertation Evolutionary Algorithms for Supervised Ensemble Learning. “My research looks at ensemble learning, which is a method to extract knowledge from big data. Because of that, I was awarded with a Print grant”, he comments.
The partnership between his advisor Dr Rodrigo Barros, from the School of Technology, and Professor Alex Freitas, a renowned University of Kent researcher, has made it possible for Caginini to embark upon this UK experience. Freitas enjoys tremendous recognition in the areas of machine learning, data mining and evolutionary algorithms. “I’m sure my doctoral research will gain momentum as I am being advised by Professor Freitas. Exchanging experiences with students who study the same things that I do and having a researcher who relies on years of relevant experience will raise my awareness of which paths I have to take to produce good findings in my investigation”, Cagnini adds.
