Earlier in May, the professor of the Graduate Program in History of PUCRS Dr Luciano de Abreu, went on a mission to the Catholic University of America (CUA), in the USA. Abreu also serves as editor-in-chief of EDIPUCRS – PUCRS Publisher. Abreu is working under the cooperation project Macro and microeconomic aspects associated with economic, social, human and environmental development, which is being coordinated by Dr Edimara Luciano, under the priority area World in Motion: Individuals and Society.
One of the goals of the mission was to strengthen the ties of the partnership with CUA researchers, which is still in their infancy. It also sought to consolidate a network involving researchers from Brazil and the USA on corporativism associated with economic development and possible influences from social Catholicism.
During his stay abroad, Abreu had the chance to go through the records of Rev. John A. Ryan, an economist and CUA professor, in the first half of the 20th century. He published important works on the social aspect of labor, having had some influence over the the general principles adopted by Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal. He has also took part in work-related meetings with deans and vice-presidents of that institution, members of research teams and the director of CUA Press, in an effort to establish future partnerships between the two institutions.
In Abreu’s view, it has been quite a relevant mission in view of the Catholic and Pontifical nature of both institutions. “On top of that, PUCRS and CUA have a number of areas of interest in common, such as: History, Political Science, Sociology, Theology, Philosophy and Health Sciences”, he adds. He is expected to continue working on research projects involving Dr Nathália Henrich, director of the The Oliveira Lima Library, and CUA faculty, after the visit.
