The professor of the Graduate Program in Computer Science (PPGCC), of the School of Technology, Dr Renata Vieira, is on a mission abroad at the University of Edinburgh, in Scotland. The mission is in support of the PUCRS-PrInt program (Call 02/2019 – Work Missions Abroad). She is working on the project Development of Innovative Technologies and Processes in Health, which is coordinated by Professor Dr Maria Martha Campos and embraced by the priority area Health in Human Development.

In her 20-day mission in the UK, Renata will be at the Usher Institute of Population Health Science and Informatics of the British institution’s School of Medicine. The institute operates in two distinct areas: both in the old School of Medicine, in the central part of the city, and at the Bioquarter, the new research, innovation and entrepreneurship health care center. “Bioquarter is located in the complex that is home to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, a renowned research institute that houses several health care companies”, Renata says.

Vieira claims that her mission in Scotland is intended for her to learn more about the projects of Professor Saturnino Luz. He holds a degree in Computer Science and Natural Language Processing. Today he serves as a Professor in the School of Medicine. In his research, Luz works with a number of distinct health care areas, but focuses on language and dementia studies.

“As we established the Group for Artificial Intelligence in Health, under the Graduate Program in Computer Science in 2018, in partnership with the Graduate Program in Biomedical Gerontology, this mission will serve to establish a channel of cooperation for future projects”, Renata adds. The way she sees it, this is an opportunity to learn from Professor Luz on the challenges and best ways to work in an interdisciplinary way. Other goals of the mission include spotting possibilities for cooperation and future joint degrees.

Activities in the schedule

During her stay abroad, Renata will be working at the Usher Institute at Bioquarter, and take part in seminars and get to know about the things that have been developed by Professor Luz’s group at the University of Edinburgh. She will also introduce them to the ongoing projects of PUCRS and PUCRS-PrInt in order to spot mutual topics of international cooperation.
