Ana Maria Marques, professor at PUCRS School of Medicine, participated in a mission at KU Leuven, Belgium, through the Institutional Project of Internationalization (PUCRS-PrInt) from January 30 to February 15, 2020. The professor is in the team of the cooperation project Development of technologies and innovative processes in health, linked to the theme Health in Human Development.
This partnership with the Belgian institution started during the professor’s post-doctoral research, carried out between August 2018 and February 2019, in which she studied techniques for quantifying multimodal PET/CT/MR images for the investigation of neurodegenerative diseases. “We basically studied ways to identify parameters extracted from medical images indicating the evolution of diseases such as multiple sclerosis, mild cognitive impairment, and Alzheimer’s disease. The investigated techniques include radiomics and machine learning, which are major areas in data science”, she explains.
Collaboration with KU Leuven is mainly with Professor Michel Koole, who came to PUCRS as a visiting professor through PUCRS-PrInt in August 2019. Then, collaboration was further strengthened with the co-supervision of doctoral student Caroline Dartora, from the Graduate Program in Biomedical Gerontology, who completed her 6-month sandwich doctorate with Dr. Koole.
