Italian immigration and culture are themes of international visit at PUCRS
Walter Zidaric is the director of the School of Foreign Languages and Cultures at Nantes Université
At PUCRS, Walter Zidaric will participate in a sequence of activities that bring attention to the cultural heritage and the influences of Italian immigration. A specialist in Italian studies, Zidaric studies the connection between literature, music, and society, focusing on opera and Italian culture.
Through the Institutional Project of Internationalization (PUCRS-PrInt), Walter Zidaric was welcomed to the university by Coordinator of the Office for International Cooperation, Carla Bonan, and researcher from the Graduate Program in History and of the School of Humanities, Antonio de Ruggiero.
Activities for the academic community
During his stay at PUCRS, Zidaric will conduct three main activities. The first will be a lecture titled “The recent immigration in Italy and its contribution to the artistic and cultural fields,” mediated by Antonio Ruggiero, which will discuss the impact of immigration in the contemporary Italian cultural setting and its artistic repercussion. In addition, Zidaric will offer an extension course on “The Italian lyric opera and its international projection,” with the participation of Antonio Ruggiero, Fernando Biffignandi, of Comitês-RS, Leonardo de Oliveira Conedera, from the Federal University of Pelotas, and Isadora Aquini, of the Companhia de Ópera do Rio Grande do Sul. This course will discuss the evolution of Italian opera and its global influence. Finally, Zidaric will give a lecture accompanied by a musical performance titled “the Italian lyric opera from Verdi to Puccini,” which will include his lecture and the participation of musicians Gabriela Nunes (soprano), Patrick Brasil (pianist) and PUCRS’s chamber choir.
