The School of Medicine, relying on the support from the Office for International Cooperation, has promoted another edition of the summer course Immersion in General Surgery. The three-week program, delivered entirely in English, welcomed Brazilian and international students, who had the chance to do practicum work at an operating room.

In the view of Marcelo Toneto, coordinator of the program, this has been quite a rewarding experience. “In two years, we’ve had students from Chile, Argentina, Costa Rica and Brazil. It involves essentially practicum work as students have the chance to join the surgery team at São Lucas Hospital”, he says.

In the program that was offered in the Southern hemisphere summer, students worked at operating rooms and provided assistance to both outpatient and internalized patients. They also had the chance to take part in seminars and discussions involving specific clinical cases. “The fact that these students shared their experiences with our students at PUCRS is another factor that was extremely beneficial, especially because they learned a lot and had discussions in a different language”, Toneto adds.

Alisson Cascante, a Medical School student at Universidad de Costa Rica, chose Brazil for an international program because the country is a reference in plastic surgery. She was awarded a scholarship through the partnership between PUCRS and Associação Columbus and, in her view, this is quite an enriching experience. “I had the opportunity to meet surgeons and resident doctors and learn more about plastic surgery and other specialties”, she comments.

For Brazilian student Gllória Palma, this experience has been positive too as she had practice and cross-sectional work done in Medicine. “We can see theory and practice and, in the operating rooms, we can experience a great deal of what we learn with our professors. It gives us a very comprehensive view of surgery”, she added.
