The School of Medicine was created on Sept 10, 1969, after a meeting of PUCRS’ University Council, which was presided over by its President Br José Otão.
The implementation of PUCRS’ School of Medicine played a decisive role in an attempt to solve the social needs of the time: as there were too many applicants for Medicine schools and the training provided in Medical Schools of Rio Grande do Sul needed to be revisited. In 48 years of existence, the School has produced 3107 medical doctors.
The program was accredited by the Federal Government on Feb 12, 1976, through Decree No. 77135/76, published in the Federal Official Gazette.
