Bruna Capparelli defended her dissertation with honors in joint degree program

Law School’s Graduate Program in Criminal Sciences (PPGCrim), in line with the perspectives of internationalization, has been keen to promote joint degree programs, in which its graduate students are jointly advised by professors from their own countries and from other universities abroad. Italian student Bruna Capparelli, who defended her dissertation on May 10 at the Universitá di Bologna (Italy), was one of such students who chose this type of program. She then received honors in her defense, as she was advised by Dr Giulio Illuminati and Dr Michele Caianiello, from Bologna, and by PUCRS’ Law School professor Dr Nereu Giacomolli.
Bruna, who went to school in Porto Alegre for one year, chose the University because of the similarities between the legal systems of Italy and Brazil, and also because of the reputation the PPGCrim and its professors enjoy. “I was lucky to be advised by Dr Nereu Giacomolli, and the whole PUCRS team, and I was given the chance to grow mature. Feed my passion for law and justice and pursue my goals”, says she. This experience has been very fruitful for the research methods employed in her work as she addressed the defendant in the Italian legal system and their constitutional and supranational repercussions.
Institutional collaboration
Although she finished the program, she hopes to continue contributing to the relationship between the two institutions. In her view, this would be beneficial as it would induce young scholars to develop advanced studies and research into Criminal Procedures and Criminal Sciences. “I believe this relationship must be continued and, because it is very fruitful from an educational perspective, it would be good for both institutions to exchange their findings and ideas. This would consolidate the results achieved thus far and, consequently, benefit the entire scientific community”, concludes Bruna.
Internationalization
Bruna is the second Italian student on a joint degree program with PPGCrim. Professor Giacomelli has told us that the first student on this program was from Germany and they defended their dissertation in 2017. Giacomelli is currently advising a student from Università degli studi di Pavia (Italy), who is expected to defend their dissertation in the first semester of 2019. According to the professor, this third doctoral dissertation, to be jointly defended with European universities, has shown effective results as it has built up the reputation of the PPGCrim internationally.
