DNA Sequencing

DNA sequencing is a fundamental tool for describing genetic information of organisms. Among the most widely used approaches are Whole-genome sequencing (WGS), which analyzes the entire genome of an organism, and Amplicon Sequencing, focused on specific regions, such as ITS (internal transcribed spacer) and 16S, widely applied in the identification of microorganisms.
- Whole-genome sequencing (WGS): Allows comprehensive analysis of the genome, including coding and non-coding regions. This approach provides a detailed view of the genetic composition and is ideal for complex studies, such as evolution, genomic mutations, and discovery of new genes.
- Targeted Sequencing (ITS, 16S): Focused on specific regions of DNA, such as the ITS, used to identify fungi, and the 16S rRNA gene, widely used in the identification of bacteria. This technique is more economical and efficient for taxonomic analyses or studies of microbial communities.
- Total Metagenomics (Shotgun Metagenomics): Without the amplification of specific regions, this technique involves the sequencing of all DNA present in an environmental sample. This allows the analysis of all genetic material in the sample, including bacteria, archaea, viruses, fungi, and other eukaryotes, without amplification bias.
Both techniques are complementary methodological alternatives in solutions in environmental biotechnology, agriculture, and other areas, contributing to the identification of microorganisms, the production of biomolecules, biodiversity studies and sustainable energy solutions.
