Project presentation:
Experiments with controlled CO2 leakage have been developed worldwide with the aim of testing and validating technologies adapted to monitor geological carbon storage sites. These studies are smaller-scale and less costly representations, but guarantee representative field data.
Another point to be considered in relation to the monitoring stage refers to the high cost of field surveys, carried out in specific periods, with intense mobilization of equipment and professionals, which often prevents adequate monitoring and correct compliance with the monitoring plan. The need to develop an innovative product has been observed, with the purpose of promoting changes in the efficiency of CO2 monitoring at storage sites, reducing impacts on human health and favoring, in fact, the mitigation of climate change. In view of this, the project includes the development of an Automated CO2 Monitoring Station (ECO2A) that will function as a reception, recording and transmission center for data from sensors installed in wells and groundwater and soil gas monitoring stations. .
ECO2A, as well as several other monitoring methodologies and techniques (CO2 flux, CO2 isotopes and concentrations, groundwater, gaseous tracers, continuous remote geoelectric) that have been studied by IPR, will be tested in a controlled injection and leakage campaign of CO2 at the TECNOPUC experimental site (Viamão – RS).
