Scope
Founded in 1972, the Graduate Program in Psychology offers Master’s and Doctoral degrees in three areas of concentration: Clinical Psychology, Human Cognition and Social Psychology. The program is awarded grade 6 by CAPES (on a scale that goes from 0 to 7) and is supported by CAPES’ Academic Excellence Program (PROEX).
The curriculum of the Master’s and Doctoral degrees includes subjects and activities in four different areas: (a) method; (b) teacher training; (c) training for research; and (d) training in the area of concentration. The activities includes orientation sessions with advisors, meetings with other members of the graduate program, teaching internship, internal pre-qualification seminar, qualification exam, scientific publication, and extension activities. The set of courses and activities will train professors and researchers to be leaders in psychology research.
The program is a national and international reference in its areas of concentration. Since admission, students are advised by a faculty member. Collaboration with other professors/researchers in the program or even external professors is very common; students are encouraged to approach research topics from an interdisciplinary perspective. The program has agreements and partnerships with other international programs of excellence in Psychology and related areas.
Goals
The goals of the program are:
(a) produce highly-qualified personnel to do research and teach; (b) produce relevant and innovative knowledge in the area; (c) contribute to regional development.
The goal of the Master’s program is to develop theoretical and methodological skills and competences for research, teaching and professional practice in the chosen field of study, and encourage integrity and ethics in the production and dissemination of knowledge. The PhD course will provide deeper insights into the theory of a given area of investigation, as well as the methodological insights to develop innovative research, with visibility and interdisciplinarity. The PhD program aims to produce personnel to do research, establish a research program independently, work with international partners in interdisciplinary contexts and teach.
