In 2019, the V International Conference on Philosophies of Education and Critical Pedagogies will be in its fifth edition, sponsored by the Graduate Program in Education of the Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio Grande do Sul, in partnership with the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, Universidade de Caxias do Sul, Universidade Federal de Pelotas, Universidade de Santa Maria, Universidade Estadual de Ponta Grossa, Universidade Federal Fluminense, University College of London and National University of Ireland.
The 1st International Conference on Philosophies of Education and Critical Pedagogies took place in Liverpool, UK, and was organized by the Paulo Freire Center of Liverpool Hope University, in Jun 2014. Dr. Paul Smeyers (University of Leuven), Dr. Gert Biesta (University of Luxembourg), Dr. John Holmwood (University of Nottingham) and Dr. Craig Calhoun (London School of Economics) were the keynote speakers.
In Jun 2015, the 2nd International Conference on Philosophies of Education and Critical Pedagogies, was again promoted by the Liverpool Hope University. Discussions were led by Dr. Sharon Todd (Maynooth University, Ireland), Dr. Barbara Thayer-Bacon (University of Tennessee, US), Dr. Nicholas Burbules (University of Illinois, US) and Dr. Hanan Alexander (University of Haifa, Israel).
In partnership with the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain, Liverpool Hope University promoted and opened its doors to the 3rd International Conference on Philosophies of Education and Critical Pedagogies, in Jun 2016. Dr. Judith Suissa (Institute of Education, UK), Dr. Penny Enslin (University of Glasgow, UK), Dr. Richard Smith (University of Durham, UK) and Dr. Peter Roberts (University of Canterbury, NZ) were some of the guest speakers.
The most recent edition of the event occurred in Jul 2017, at the University of Winchester, UK. Dr. Ruth Irwin (University of Aberdeen), Dr. Marc Depaepe (University of Leuven), Dr. Aislinn O’Donnell (University of Maynooth) and Dr. John Petrovic (University of Alabama) were some of the highlights of the 4th International Conference on Critical Pedagogies and Philosophies of Education, with the support of the Philosophy of Education Society of Great Britain.
In line with the themes of the previous editions, the Conference is now a reference for discussions in Education, as we believe that it is necessary to share experiences and insights, as well as advance the integration and cooperation among researchers. Similarly, current emerging challenges, which are increasingly complex and demanding, encourage the university and academic community to strengthen ties, and form collaborative networks for the development and reflection on teaching practices. Thus, the perspectives of the Philosophy of Education and Critical Pedagogies reiterate its strategic relevance for research and teaching practices in the everyday lives of educators, researchers, students and educational managers.
Here are the goals of the conference:
