Material edited by Springer-Verlag describes computer models to simulate crowds in emergency situations
International book Simulating Crowds in Egress Scenarios, by Springer-Verlag, is the result of the doctoral thesis of School of Technology student, Dr Vinícius Cassol. The book is co-authored by PUCRS professor Dr Soraia Musse, UFRGS professor Dr Cláudio R. Jung and University of Pennsylvania professor, Dr Norman I Badler. “Springer-Verlag is very prestigious all over the world. We’re very happy we’ve been invited to contribute”, says Soraia.
The book describes computer models to simulate and analyze pedestrian crowds with focus on panic effects and emergency situations. Cassol worked on his research with crowds at Engenhão (RJ), at building 32 of PUCRS, at Pastor Dohms Elementary, Middle an High School and at Santa Mônica nightclub.
In addition to the book and simulations, the research has produced the software CrowdSim, the first crowd simulation software developed in Brazil. The results of the research will make it possible for investigators to simulate environments before they get too crowded and think up the best evacuation plans to be used in simulations with real people.
