Three other universities launched their candidature for hosting the event, which will happen in 2020
The president of the International Sociological Association (ISA), Margaret Abraham, confirmed that PUCRS has been selected to host the entity’s 4th Forum of Sociology, which occurs every four years. The event, which is scheduled for Jul 2020, is expected to attract 4,000 participants from all over the world to Porto Alegre.
After a careful analysis, the executive board made its final decision for Porto Alegre, which was informed to School of Humanities professor, Dr Hermílio Santos, as special mention was made of PUCRS’ Main Campus. It is an easily accessible place for such an event like this, as it is equipped with areas for conferences, meetings and food courts, as well as technology resources. Dr Abraham, a professor at Hofstra University (USA), went on to say that Brazil has fewer restrictions when it comes to visa policies. The Forum’s main theme has not been decided yet as its vice president and the coordinating committee of the research area will be elected at the World Congress of Sociology, in Toronto (Canada), in 2018.
Universities of Moscow, Helsinki and Lyon launched their candidatures for the event. Earlier this year, Santos went to Saint Petersburg (Russia) to formally present PUCRS proposal at a meeting with the ISA’s Executive Board. He serves as Coordinator of the Center of Economic and Social Analyses of the University and vice president of the ISA’s Biographies and Society Research Committee.
Visit to Porto Alegre
Moscow and Porto Alegre appeared as finalists. Earlier in July, an ISA delegation, headed by the entity’s president, paid a visit to Porto Alegre. The President of PUCRS Br. Evilázio Teixeira opened the university’s doors to support its candidature by request of the Graduate Program in Social Sciences.
