PUCRS’ researches presented at Brain 2017

Many professors and students represented PUCRS at the World Congress on Brain, Behavior and Emotions 2017. The international congress, which is one of the most important neuroscience events around the globe, brought together more than 130 renowned researchers and specialists from several countries, and more than 5,000 attendees, from Jun 14-17, at Fiergs, in Porto Alegre.

The 17th edition addressed behavioral changes, emotion and perception. PUCRS researchers Alexandre RosaAugusto Buchweitz and Nathalia Bianchini Esper delivered a workshop on functional neuroimaging. On the other hand, professor Mirna Portuguez addressed the clinical and neuropsychological aspects of superagers.

Among the students, Ricardo Trentin, who earned the Lundbeck Award, presented the paper Functional Connectivity of the Hippocampus and Maintenance of Memory in Superagers: preliminary Results. Medicine and Health Sciences PhD student Rachel Molina visited the University’s stand between the lectures and workshops. “This is such an international congress that brings together great researchers and encourages students to take one step further.”

PUCRS’ Vice president and director of the Brain Institute of Rio Grande do Sul (BraIns), Jaderson Costa da Costa, served as the congress’ vice president. He was in charge of introducing one of the most anticipated guests, Mozambican writer Mia Couto. In addition to that, he presented the findings of an investigation intended to prove the brain’s ability to self-regenerate after interactions with the peripheral system. “All fields of knowledge are involved: Humanities, Applied Sciences and Biological Sciences as well. The Congress was an interactive opportunity to foster teaching, spring surprises and arouse emotions”, claimed he.

Education, research, and health care together

PUCRS’ School of Medicine and Faculty of Nursing, Nutrition and Physiotherapy, as well as the Brain Institute and the São Lucas Hospital represented the university’s excellence in teaching, research and health care in the area of health sciences at an institutional stand during the event.

Visitors could go on a virtual tour around the BraIns, HSL and the PUCRS’ Rehabilitation Center, as they wore virtual reality glasses.

Researchers, students and professionals visited the university’s stand, including Karl Friston, one of the most renowned neuroscientists. Researcher Vitor Haase visited PUCRS’ stand, too.
