The work financed by Unesco involved 13 countries to discuss the education, working conditions and careers of teachers on a global scale
The professor and researcher from PUCRS’s School of Humanities, Alexandre Anselmo Guilherme, organized the book Teacher education around the world: challenges and opportunities, published recently by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco-Brasil) and the Catholic University of Brasília’s (UCB) Unesco Chair on Youth, Education and Society. The professor was an editor alongside professor Renato de Oliveira Brito, from UCB, in the project that involved 13 countries to discuss the education, working conditions and careers of teachers on a global scale.
The book discusses the global educational, political, social and cultural context, presenting the experiences of researchers connected to global leadership universities from Brazil, Chile, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Finland, United Kingdom, India, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Israel. The purpose of the book is the show the challenges and opportunities of development of these respective educational systems, broadening discussions in an accessible manner, with free distribution in Portuguese and English. Alexandre explains that the opportunity of creating this publication arose from his work at the Ministry of Education, where he worked with professor Renato. Because of this relationship, they got together to create the project in a network with international contacts and promoted by Unesco and the Chair in Brasília.
Bernardete Gatti, researcher in Education from the Carlos Chagas Institute for Advanced Studies (University of São Paulo), was responsible for the introduction of the book, where she stressed the importance of basic schooling for large parts of the population in different countries. As the professor explains in the introduction, professionals in education have important roles in the process of developing new generations, offering the effective social and civic participation of these young people in a community life.
“Understanding and discussing the education, working conditions and careers of teachers, and, as a consequence, their professional identity configuration, becomes important for educational politics and actions that bring quality to the education process that occurs in the everyday school life, it its various contexts and levels,” stresses Bernardete.
