Over the course of 2018, University has appeared in most important academic rankings
In 2018, PUCRS celebrates its 70 years of history with national and international recognitions. Different rankings place the University as one of the best places to study in Brazil. This confirms the excellence of the actions that have been carried out at the institution. The Vice President of Undergraduate Studies and Continuing Education, Br. Manuir Mentges, claims that knowing that the quality and relevance of the University’s actions is being recognized both in Brazil and overseas is a reason to be proud. “This year alone, PUCRS featured in at least nine of the most relevant national and international rankings. This reflects the collective engagement of students, faculty and staff”, comments he.
In the Times Higher Education (THE) 2019 – one of the most influential ones in this area – PUCRS stayed atop as the best private higher education institution of Brazil. It also featured as the #1 best university in Latin America and in a list that includes institutions in emerging economies. In the THE Golden Age Rankings, which enlists the best universities established between 1945 and 1967, PUCRS appeared as the only institution from Rio Grande do Sul.
Overall, THE looks at the strengths of each university: teaching, research, citations, industry income and international outlook. In different rankings, the University gained prominence in all categories.
The Vice President of Research and Graduate Studies, Dr Carla Bonan, claims that these recognitions reflect the quality of the research and graduate programs of PUCRS. “These are directly related to the qualification of the faculty in the Graduate Programs. They play a very important role in research projects with universities abroad. In addition to that, the university has a unique infrastructure to develop these projects”, views she.
She sees the high-quality academic production of students and faculty as another strength, especially involving international partners, which ensures the visibility of the institution. “These efforts endorse our commitment to the production of knowledge and academic excellence”, completes she.
In 2018, PUCRS featured as the best higher education institution in the south of Brazil in the QS World University Ranking by British company Quacquarelli Symonds. It also featured as the #1 in the Latin American ranking and in the most recent edition of QS BRICS 2019. The British company’s list is considered one of the most popular university rankings all over the world. The company earned PUCRS the recognition as one of the best universities in the world to study Medicine, Computer Science and Information Systems, as per the 8th edition of the QS University Rankings by Subject.
The Dean of International Cooperation, Dr Heloísa Delgado, sees international rankings as important tools for the visibility of the university, and place PUCRS side-by-side with consolidated universities all over the world. Besides, indicators point to the paths the University must take and which must be gradually improved for it to become a reference.
