Students watched opening ceremony with University Buddies and Academic Mobility team
International students on mobility at PUCRS this semester joined an activity with university buddies and the Academic Mobility team on Jun 14, to watch the opening ceremony of the 2018 World Cup and the tournament’s first match, Russia X Saudi Arabia. The action was planned by the Office for International Cooperation .
The group took a quiz to find out how much they knew about soccer in an elaborately decorated lounge equipped with a wide screen. Students from Spain, England, Mexico, Colombia, Uruguay, Germany, Italy and France pulled for their favorite teams as they took their guesses and celebrated. They had the chance to talk about how much people in their countries love soccer and learn a bit more about their colleagues’ culture.
Lifting the trophy
Colombian students Daniela Chacón and Daniela Morales, from Corporación Universitaria Minuto de Dios, have been at PUCRS since February, as Journalism students, at the School of Communications, Arts and Design (Famecos). Whereas the former will root for Brazil, the latter dreams that her native country’s will lift the trophy. “I want to see Brazil play against Germany in the finals. But this time, I hope Brazil wins”, says Daniela Chacón. On the other hand, her friend believes the final will be Argentina x Germany.
British student Edward Owen, from Newcastle University, a History major at PUCRS, roots for England. A soccer fan, he will be watching part of the tournament here and the last matches in his home country. “Brazil and Germany will make it to the finals and Germany will win again”, says he.
