The professor from the University of Salamanca gave the opening speech of the event

On October 8, the 13th International Seminar of History of Literature and the Journey Cameo Portraits: Biography of Women Writers from Rio Grande do Sul, was promoted by the Graduate Program in Letters (PPGL) of PUCRS School of Humanities. The annual event, which had its first edition in 1995, aims to gather national and foreign professors and students from the fields of History of Literature, Literary Theory, Brazilian Literature, Literary Criticism, Comparative Literature, and others to discuss and analyze the current state of these disciplines in the field of Literary Studies.
In the opening session of the event, which will take place in Campus Building 8, room 305 until Thursday the 10th, the coordinators Maria Eunice Moreira and Regina Kohlrausch highlighted the relevance of the meeting and its strengthening over the years. Since its first edition, the Seminar has brought together experts in the field and strengthened research networks. PUCRS PPGL is a pioneer center in this field in Brazil, promoting events with the presence of renowned researchers from Brazil and abroad.

For the opening conference, Ascensión Rivas Hernández , a Spanish Professor from Universidad de Salamanca talked about Nélida Piñon and the nine short stories in The Husband’s Shirt, her latest work published in Spanish. The researcher pointed out intertextual relations in the book and its relations with other classical works, such as the European novel, Cervantes’ Don Quijote, and the Bible. According to the Professor, Piñon carried this cultural background in her development as an artist to translate it into another format in her fictional work.
Hernández is recognized for her more than 30 articles and 6 books published so far. She works in the Spanish Language Department of Universidad de Salamanca, which develops joint projects with PUCRS. In addition to the opening conference, the visiting professor will also teach a short course about the Brazilian writer during the seminar.
Her presence strengthens the international cooperation ties between PUCRS and Universidad de Salamanca, encouraging new partnerships. Her period at the University will result in a joint publication by PPGL on Brazilian Literature, to be launched in 2020.
