International Congress of Sociolinguistics at PUCRS

University of Latvia professor gave lecture and workshop for young researchers

2018_04_24-congresso-jovens-cientistas2PUCRS was home to the 1st Congress for Young Sociolinguistics Researchers in Latin America from May 17 – 18. The event, sponsored by the Center for European and German Studies  (CDEA) and the Graduate Program in Modern Languages of UFRGS, featured 18 young researchers, representing 5 countries and 15 higher education institutions, who shared their research projects, discussing their findings and presenting an overview of current trends in Sociolinguistics in Latin America.

The program featured six roundtables, which included young researchers from Brazil, Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, and other activities by University of Latvia professor, Dr Heiko F. Marten. He delivered the lecture The Practical Application of a Holistic Model of Language Policy: The Case of Latvia and held the workshop Researching Multilingualism in the Linguistic Landscape: Real-life Examples and Virtual Spaces. Research on linguistic landscapes is a developing field in language studies.

The organization team comprises Svenja Brünger (DAAD/UFRGS), Alana Fries (PPGLetras/UFRGS), Katiane de Carvalho Coêlho (PPGLetras/UFRGS) and Maria Liz Benitez (PPGLetras/UFRGS). The congress was specifically intended to bring graduate students together, as it was meant to encourage Latin American integration and the construction of a network of contacts and cooperation between students.
