The university went from 14th to 13th position among Latin American higher education institutions in new Times Higher Education (THE) international ranking. PUCRS and UFRGS are the education institutions from Rio Grande do Sul among the 10 best in Brazil
For another consecutive year, PUCRS is among the best universities in Latin American and the Caribbean, according to the new survey, Times Higher Education (THE) Latin America 2023, released this past Tuesday, July 4th. The University appears as the best private institution in the South of Brazil, in second place among all the private Brazilian universities, and went up from the 14th position (2021) to the 13th, considering the 197 public and private education institutions that were assessed, from 15 countries.
PUCRS and UFRGS (6th) are the only education institutions from Rio Grande do Sul listed among the 10 best in Brazil. In the ranking — considered one of the most important indicators of global higher education —, the institution stands out especially when it comes to transference of knowledge to the industry, research, education, citations and international perspectives.
According to the president of the University, Br. Evilázio Teixeira, this recognition is consistent with the continuous improvement of the work developed in these areas and reinforces the institution’s commitment to the positive impact on society, production of knowledge and excellence in teaching.
“What the rankings show is always the potential of our university community, which increasingly impacts not only our city, but the country and the world. Based on results from 2021 and indicating growth, this ranking is also more evidence of our dedication of maintaining excellence in teaching and in research during the pandemic,” he says.
PUCRS is among the top two thousand universities in the world, according to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), surpassing 90% of institutions. In addition to being one of the highest-rated Brazilian universities in the ranking, it was the only private institution from Rio Grande do Sul on the list.
For the fourth consecutive year, it is considered the best private university in the South of Brazil, according to MEC. The results refer to the evaluation of the continuous Índice Geral de Cursos (IGC) of 2021. On a scale from 1 to 5, the University scored 3,7925, which is considered a 4.
Also in 2023, the University stood out in the areas of Philosophy, Medicine and Technology in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023, a survey that assesses the quality of undergraduate courses and graduate programs by field of knowledge. It is the first time that the field of Philosophy from PUCRS appears among the best in the world.
The Times Higher Education (THE) is a British ranking, considered one of the most relevant in the world. The English magazine, which publishes news and articles regarding higher education, is related to the paper The Times, which, every year, elaborates a set of rakings, considered one of the most comprehensive, fair and reliable. Brazil had over 65 participating institutions. The ranking is elaborated based on five main indicators, and the institutions are given a score for each criterion, which have different weights for the final score.
