Barry Tumelty talked about the approximation between Brazil and Ireland
PUCRS was visited by Barry Tumelty, the Consul General of Ireland in Sao Paulo, on July 11. The diplomat was welcomed at the Noble Hall of the President’s Office by Senior Vice President Jaderson Costa da Costa, and they discussed movements of approximation between Brazil and Ireland.
The meeting, which was attended by Ireland’s education consultant Sarah O’Sullivan, included the presentation of the PUCRS 360º movement, and talks on the institution’s interest in continuing to improve its internationalization work in schools and institutes. The Irish representatives pointed out that, during the Science without Borders program, Ireland hosted more than 3,500 Brazilian students and its institutions were satisfied with their level of education. That has ultimately encouraged them to continue the approximation with Brazilian universities.
Sarah spoke about the wish to promote international cooperation in research, connecting Brazilian and Irish researchers in several fields of knowledge. According to the Consul General, Ireland currently ranks 11th in the world in quality of research, having materials science as one of the country’s main fields of excellence.
During the visit, the Irish representatives also had the opportunity to visit PUCRS’ Science and Technology Park (Tecnopuc). Present at the reception were Solimar Amaro, Dean of Institutional Relations, Alexander Bernardes Goulart, Head of The President’s Office, and Heloísa Delgado, Dean of International Cooperation.
