The group responsible for gastrointestinal tract surgery and oncology of PUCRS’ School of Medicine joined their efforts at the II International Gastrointestinal Symposium – Update In Esophageal And Gastric Cancers earlier in October. The event brought together students, residents, professors and professionals and featured Dr Alan Livingstone, professor of the University of Miami – Miller School of Medicine, and a renowned cancer surgeon in the USA. Participants were encouraged to interact in English, as all the lectures and discussions were conducted with no translation provided.
During his visit to PUCRS, Dr. Livingstone was keen to visit the Campus and the facilities of São Lucas Hospital. He also played an active role in the tumor board, a meeting held every week to discuss cancer patients at the hospital.
The Scientific Committee responsible for the event was formed by School of Medicine professors, Dr Marcelo Toneto, Dr. André Fay and Dr. Lúcio Fillmann. Letícia Debon, a student in the Graduate Program in Medicine and Health Sciences, played an important role in the organization of the event, too. The event was supported by the Academic Leagues of Oncology and Surgery of the School of Medicine.
