Luis Henrique Rolim is guest curator of “Is it a Beautiful Game?”, an exhibition about the relationship between soccer and media
School of Health and Life Sciences professor, Dr. Luís Henrique Rolim, was invited to curate the exhibition Is it a Beautiful Game? at the Media Majlis gallery of Northwestern University in Qatar, the host country of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.
This opportunity came two years ago because of his reputation as researcher and historian about Qatar’s sport, as well as his experience as Head of Research department of the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, one of the largest sports museums on the planet.
The guest-curated exhibition opened in early August and will close on November 12th, it sheds light on the different aspects of soccer around the world and the role of the media in globalizing and mediating the passion for the sport. Rolim also was one of the editors of the book “Is it a Beautiful Game? The Sound of Sport”, published by Media Majlis gallery. The publication is in both English and Arabic featuring interviews and essays on the role of sound in sports.
The Media Majlis at Northwestern University in Qatar is a museum dedicated to exploring journalism, communication and media. Considered the first media museum in the Arab world, is an space that blends past, present and future through global, regional and local lenses, and call audiences to explore alternative views, discover rich histories and hear less-heard voices.
Dr. Luis Henrique Rolim served both as a Head of Research and Consultant Curator of the Qatar Olympic and Sports Museum, especially for the galleries “Qatar – Hosting Nation” and “Qatar Sports”. Located at Khalifa International Stadium, the museum opened its doors in March 2022 under the patronage of Qatar’s Emir, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. The museum aims to take visitors on a journey through the sport’s global and local history through seven galleries. There is worldwide artefacts, dating back to the sport’s early history displayed in 19,000 square meters of exhibition space.
The museum’s galleries are divided into the Global History of Sport; the Olympics; a Hall of Athletes; and an Activation Zone to reinforce the importance of physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. In addition to that, topics such as how Qatar became the hosting nation of major sporting events and the history of modern sport in the country, from the first clubs to the today’s investments, are highlighted in the galleries consultant curated by Dr. Rolim.
