School of Humanities professor Edison Hüttner to talk about astronomer Buenaventura Suárez's work
On Apr 18, the School of Humanities professor, Dr. Edison Hüttner, will be at the Center for Brazilian Studies (CEB) of the Universidad de Salamanca (Spain) to present a manuscript written by South American astronomer, Reverend Buenaventura Suárez. Published around 1740, in Spanish and Latin, the material includes the geographic coordinates of the 30 reductions of the Jesuit Province of Paraguay, and showed the distance between them.
The material came to Hüttner’s hands in 2017. Although some of the pages and the title are missing, Hüttner assumed it was a book judging by the type of handwriting and content. “The idea of the book was to teach Jesuit culture to the indigenous population”, he says.
The manuscript was on display at the Main Library of PUCRS in 2018, and now Hüttner, who coordinates the project Jesuit-Guarani Sacred Art, is presenting it in Spain. José Manuel Santos Pérez, History of the Americas professor, at Universidad de Salamanca, will be with Hüttner to discuss the context of production of the manuscript.
The event will be streamed live through CEB’s social media: Facebook and Youtube. No early registration is required
