Online event featured more than 1,000 attendees from all over the world
PUCRS, Universidad de Antioquia (Colombia), Florida International University (USA) and Universidad de Nacional de Mar Del Plata (Argentina) joined forces with Universidade do Vale do Itajaí – UNIVALI, on Sept 22-24, for the XVIII International Virtual Conference of the Americas’ Network for Chronic Disease Surveillance (AMNET) and the 1st International Symposium on Chronic Diseases: Perspectives, Trends and Innovation. The congress was included in the curriculum of the course on Clinical-Epidemiological Evidence of PUCRS’ Graduate Program in Medicine and Health Sciences, which, this year, was jointly taught with UNIVALI and the Universidad de Antioquia.
The event was attended by more than 1,000 people, among students, faculty, researchers, and members of society, especially from Latin America and Europe. The attendees had the chance to share experiences in teaching, research and innovation with national and international institutions. These experiences helped participants address issues associated with epidemiology and society overall, develop actions to reduce the morbidity and mortality of the main chronic diseases and promote international work networks.
According to Dr. Rita Mattiello, School of Medicine professor and research coordinator, the sessions addressed topics, such as: analysis, search and construction of scientific evidence, the role of internationalization for professional development, the importance of self-care for physical and mental health, surveillance and prevention of chronic diseases, among others.
Among the highlights of the event were discussions on the importance of international experiences, the consequences of sedentary lifestyles on human health and wellness and the impact of multitasking on humans. “For each task we try to execute concurrently, we end up losing quality in the process. In addition, physical activity, sleep, healthy eating and full attention to daily activities are fundamental for physical and mental health”, she explains. The event also served to launch the AMNET journal.
The Americas’ Network for Chronic Disease Surveillance (AMNET) is a non-profit organization that promotes the integration of governmental and non-governmental organizations for advanced professional training in epidemiological surveillance, case management, prevention and control of chronic diseases. Currently, a number of PUCRS students and professors are affiliated to AMNET as regular members, committee members or coordinators. Dr. Rita Mattiello, for instance, currently serves as vice president for AMNET.
Other activities within the scope of the Institutional Project of Internationalization (PUCRS-PrInt), with the participation of members of the academic communities of PUCRS and the Universidad de Antioquia, have been promoted.
