Global topics, international partnerships and mobility under discussion

The second day of the workshop Internationalization at Home – I@H: Perspectives for Undergraduate Studies congregated faculty from several programs of PUCRS at the Auditorium of Building 40 to share good practices to advance the internationalization of higher education. The workshop was delivered in two sessions: one on May 7 featuring visiting professor from Newcastle University, Dr Sue Robson, and another on May 14, in an effort to discuss initiatives and possibilities of what is known as internationalization at home.
The Dean of Undergraduate Studies of the Office of the Vice President for Undergraduate Studies and Continuing Education, Dr Adriana Kampff, opened the event as she reinforced the importance of sharing ideas and initiatives. On the other hand, the Executive Coordinator of the Office for International Cooperation, Dr Heloísa Delgado, discussed the institution’s internationalization plan. Delgado presented some actions involving teaching, research and extension and how they can contribute for a cross-sectional perspective of the internationalization of the institution.
An internationalized classroom

International perspectives inside the classroom, including courses delivered entirely in English, were some of the highlights of the cases that were presented in the event. Some of the initiatives to advance internationalization in the different Academic Schools of PUCRS included videoconference sessions with international institutions, joint work with international peers and other initiatives that encourage students to think outside of the box.
Business School professor Edimara Luciano introduced Digital Businesses, as students were invited to interview international entrepreneurs. On the other hand, School of Humanities professor, Dr Lilian Hubner shared some of the lectures delivered by international visitors to Modern Languages students.
Dr Cristina Perna, along with Fulbright English Language Fellow Kerry Pussey, discussed the project involving the Office for International Cooperation and the School of Humanities on the offer of courses in English as a Medium of Instruction – EMI for the University’s faculty. Pussey is going to be at PUCRS through an initiative of the University of Georgetown, in partnership with the US State Department.
Competitions and international events
Law School Professor, Gabriela Wallau presented the arbitration competitions involving the students of her school, as they had the chance to exchange practices with other students with an eye to advancing international perspectives. The coordinator of the School of Technology’s Mechanical Engineering program, Dr Sérgio Boscato, talked about the School of Technology’s teams that have joined student competitions such as the Politech Eco Racing and Ximango Aerodesign.
Business School professor Dr Vicente Zanella addressed the implementation of Actinspace at PUCRS, an international event that features the patents of the European Space Agency (ESA) and the French Space Agency (CNES), which encourages the creation of solutions using space technology. The event occurs simultaneously in 35 countries.
Academic Mobility

International academic mobility and the projects that affect the Campus’ routines have also been presented. Dr Francisco Kern, who is in charge of the PEC-G program, which is aimed at students from developing countries, talked about the insertion of international students in our social contexts in an effort to promote the diversity and multicultural nature of the University.
School of Medicine professor, Maria José Zanella talked about international students in summer courses. Short-term programs are intended to attract students from other institutions and promoted the exchange of experiences with regular students of the University.
Extension programs in partnership
The coordinator of the School of Health Sciences’ Gastronomy program, Professor Rochele Rodrigues, discussed the partnership between the program and CIAS Innovation, from Italy. Extension programs offered through partnerships allow students to have internationally-certified programs without having to step out of PUCRS.
Several other initiatives were presented in an effort to reinforce the importance of discussing internationalization and the advancement of cross-sectional and globalized proposals. The Office for International Cooperation is available for future discussions in an effort to provide the necessary support for the development of new practices of internationalization and for the development of relationships with partner universities.
