Event in Maynooth addresses University Social Responsibility
The President of PUCRS Br. Dr Evilázio Teixeira is joining the meeting of the International Federation of Catholic Universities (FIUC), at Saint Patrick’s College, Maynooth, Ireland, from Jul 23 – 27. The theme Catholic Universities Working in Solidarity as Responsible Agents from the Local to the Global will serve to discuss University Social Responsibility (RSU). Another event occurring in the same week is election of the new president of FIUC, at the the Federation’s 26th General Assembly. The event brings together presidents of universities and representatives of Catholic higher education institutions from all over the world.
Francisco Yáñez, president of the Organization of Catholic Universities of Latin America and the Caribbean (Oducal), claims that teaching, research and services to society and church are the three major missions of Catholic Universities. “In the next meeting, we’ll be working more closely on issues related to our social responsibility in view of our humanist perspective of building a more just and humane world”, says he. Yáñez commends Pope Francis, who believes that social promotion depends on universities as they are to be in charge of developing critical awareness on the several forms of political, economic and cultural power in the societies they are in.
