Research

The Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) is one of the most important research universities in Latin America. Located in Porto Alegre, the state capital of Rio Grande do Sul, in the Southern region of Brazil, PUCRS is a reference center for excellence in research and innovation in South America. In the present CNPq ranking of research groups, PUCRS is the leading institution among Brazilian nonprofit universities and places 18th overall.

The 24 stricto sensu graduate programs offer 24 Masters courses and 21 PhD courses in several areas of knowledge. Teaching and research are conducted by more than 300 full-time faculty with a strong international presence. PUCRS has 126 researchers with CNPq scientific production grants, which represents the second highest position of highly productive research faculty among Brazilian nonprofit universities.

Research at PUCRS, in synergy with the mission of the Institution and focused on the principles of quality and relevance, has two main objectives: production and dissemination of relevant scientific knowledge and contribution to excellence in undergraduate and graduate education. All its policies, actions and results are aimed at the economic, social and cultural development of society, both locally and at the national and international levels.

To consolidate PUCRS as a university of excellence, research seeks integration with education and extension, increased international scientific integration, interaction with all segments of society and an interdisciplinary approach to solving major challenges facing society today, following sustainability and integrity guidelines in all its actions.

Basic, applied and translational sciences are present in all areas of knowledge at PUCRS. The research developed by the Humanities and Applied Social Sciences areas has brought most of the international and national visibility to our University over the years. The Biological and Health Sciences have experienced exponential growth in the last decade, which reflects the constant investment in faculty training and employment. In the technological areas, INOVAPUC has centers with strong joint ventures with companies for the development of applied research. PUCRS’ technology park – TECNOPUC – is one of the largest science and technology parks in Latin America with the mission of creating an environment of innovation and research involving the interaction between academia, the government and industry.
