Professional Development for the Internationalisation of Learning and Teaching in Latin America - PDI LATAM

This research builds previous research conducted in Latin America focused on the development of a contextualised internationalisation of higher education curriculum (Internationalisation of Higher Education in Latin America HRE2021-0426). The aim of this project is to progress the development of resources for academic professional development for university educators in Latin America aimed at improving their skills and knowledge on internationalisation of learning and teaching in their disciplinary contexts.

Previous research has confirmed a need for such resources and frameworks to inform the development of professional learning for higher education internationalisation in Latin America (see, Whitsed et al, 2024) This project brings together researchers and international education professionals to develop academic staff capabilities to internationalise higher education in Latin America. The project is funded by the Australian Embassy Brazil (2024).

The research is exploratory, involving three phases:

The first phase involves a scoping review of academic literature published in Portuguese and Spanish on academic development and professional learning for internationalisation and a desktop audit of university websites for strategic plans, policies and resources on internationalisation and/or global engagement. The desktop audit will also focus on identifying and then analysing programs of professional learning offered to academic staff for the internationalisation of learning and teaching.

The second phase of the research will involve a sector wide survey of academic staff across universities in Brazil, Peru and Mexico to evaluate the Professional Learning Framework developed through the previous research project (Internationalisation of Higher Education in Latin America HRE2021-0426), principles, domains of learning and forms of professional learning.

The third phase of the project will be follow up confirmatory focus groups. The aim of this phase will be to test/validate the finding from phase two and to explore in greater depth survey participants responses in order to design and develop academic development and professional learning resources and learning activities.
